The photo at left shows a couple of wet, sweaty rats hiking in the bottom of the Grand Canyon last spring. But that's another story.
In a mere month we'll hoist our backpacks onto our shoulders and step aboard our home for the next 30 days: the French freighter Matisse. We expect to wash up on the Australian shore on Christmas eve, confusingly enough in the middle of summer. As our once-Brit friend Frances cautions us, they drive on the 'correct' side of the road. Of course they do. It's the other side of the world, in the southern hemisphere where, rumor has it, flushing toilets swirl in the other direction.
For now we're freezing our butts in Vermont. So far we're gracefully leaping each hurdle without even snagging our pants: visas, medical and dental exams, financial arrangements, insurance, various cancellations of mags, storage arrangements for our Chinook, et cet er a.
Keep in touch . . . and be liberal with advice and suggestions.

Welcome to the world of Blog. We are so glad to be able to follow your adventures. It will brighten our gloomy Central California winter days. Happy sailing!
Ola Art & Sally,
I know you will enjoy Australia & New Zealand.
Frances and I loved both countries and wish we could have spent more time.
Will be interested to see if you go to some of the same places we did.
Enjoy and stay safe.
Lou
Considering you typed your blog in this very room not hours ago, I can't start whining about how I'll miss you, but I will!! Dinners, studio time and tea is never enough with you, Sal My Pal and Art continues to impress with his easy going resilience in every aspect of life. You are my mentors and friends! I send you off with glowing good wishes and lots of love, Annette.
Dear fossil friends,
Strange idea that we are not going to run into you somewhere in North America.
We wish you an unforgettable trip and we will make this blog our 'favorite'.
love from your young Dutch friends CPJ
Thanks for fun times these past two weeks. We look forward to blogging with you Down Under.
Lots of love from the Vermont MacDonalds
The soup is hot, the bread is fresh, the wine is decanting and the apple pie is just coming out of the oven, but Art and Sally are no where to be found. Have fun down under. Love, Katie and Skipper
KT & Skip,
Had we known your FEET were all over the grapes, surely we would have cancelled all other invitations. Did you personally chew the wheat to make the flour, too? We shall miss you -- and your insults...

We wish you fun times which I'm sure won't be a problem. I talked to Steve last night and it sounded like you were getting a great send-off. I'm glad we will be able to share in your adventure with your blog site.

¿Cómo están uds? ¿Dónde están uds?
We hope that you are having a wonderful bday celebration, ushering in your 7th decade in some interesting, beautiful place with new friends. We all send you lots of hugs and kisses. Can't imagine continuing onto that bizarre NE tradition of pinch day, which means you get pinched for as many years as you are old. Ouch. For you old codgers, that could seem endless, eh?
We 1st, 2nd and 4th decaders here in NE are all doing fine and we can't wait to hear your next installment. Don't make us wait tooo long.
XOXOXO - The Welchitos
